Volunteerism is the core of the Indiana State University Alumni Association. Just ask Dan Buck, ’00, Ken Buck, ’73, Jennifer Hilgefort, ’90, Kent Reyling, ’76, Ben Schmidt, ’07, and Mark Schmidt, ’76. This alumni team from southern Indiana are the faces behind the Dubois County Alumni Golf Outing.
Their motivation for putting on the annual golf outing is to provide Indiana State University students from the area with scholarships. This summer’s event, held on June 4, helped Jacob Seibert, an incoming freshman from Ireland, and Grant Brescher, an incoming freshman from Jasper.
The Dubois County outing started 30 years ago when alumni Bob Rosenblatt, ’73, Mark Schmidt; Gib Verkamp, ’61, John Thyen, ’62, and Buck decided to create an event to get their fellow alumni, who lived in Dubois County, involved with the university. They weren’t sure how the planning would go or if area alumni would be interested in participating, but after their first outing, they realized golf was an activity through which alumni of all ages could connect.
“We wanted to get alumni living in Dubois County together. At the time, golf outings were a huge summer activity,” Buck said.
The outing began as a social event, but after 10 years of hosting it, the committee was able to award scholarships to a Dubois County native attending Indiana State. With increased participation, the outing’s scholarship has grown from a $500 allotment to two $1,000 annual scholarships.
Each year, there is a lot of hard work and dedication that goes into the planning process. The committee takes care of all outing details, including logistics, sponsorships, team recruitment, scholarship awards and post-tournament activities. The outing is famous for its German-inspired dinner. While enjoying their two-inch pork chops, participants have an opportunity to hear from university leaders, coaches and the Alumni Association staff about the progress of Indiana State, and meet the student scholarship recipients who they helped support.
“It’s just fun to give back and get local students a little bit of help with their cost of school,” said Hilgefort, golf committee chairperson and liaison.
